Radionuclides and heavy metal contents in phosphogypsum samples in comparison to cerrado soils Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Jacomino,Vanusa Maria Feliciano; Oliveira,Kerley Alberto Pereira de; Taddei,Maria Helena Tirollo; Siqueira,Maria Célia; Carneiro,Maria Eleonora Deschamps Pires; Nascimento,Marcos Roberto Lopes; Silva,David Faria da; Mello,Jaime Wilson Vargas de.
Phosphogysum (PG) or agricultural gypsum, a solid waste from the phosphate fertilizer industry, is used as soil amendment, especially on soils in the Cerrado region, in Brazil. This material may however contain natural radionuclides and metals which can be transferred to soils, plants and water sources. This paper presents and discusses the results of physical and chemical analyses that characterized samples of PG and compares them to the results found in two typical soils of the Cerrado, a clayey and sandy one. These analyses included: solid waste classification, evaluation of organic matter content and of P, K, Ca, Mg, and Al concentrations and of the mineralogical composition. Natural radionuclides and metal concentrations in PG and soil samples were...

Recommendations for hygiene of masks and circuits in mechanically home ventilated patients BJID
Toussaint,Michel; Reychler,Gregory.
Home mechanical ventilation requires equipment, consisting of a generator of pressure, a tubing and an interface to deliver air to the patient. Instructions for equipment maintenance are generally not based on scientific evidence. Studies however have reported that tubing and masks used at home are the most commonly found as very dirty and contaminated. Dirtiness and contamination of equipment potentially expose patients to a higher risk of airway colonization, which, in turn, should cause respiratory infections. For this reason, published hygiene instructions include the use of disinfectant solution. Nevertheless, they generally fail to explain how basic maintenance may be achieved by simple cleaning with soap and water. The instructions for post-cleaning...

Relationships between sediments and tissue contamination and allozymic patterns in Hediste diversicolor (Polychaeta Nereididae) in the Pialassa lagoons (north Adriatic Sea) ArchiMer
Virgilio, M; Baroncini, N; Trombini, C; Abbiati, M.
An increasing number of investigations revealed that responses of populations to environmental stressors may be genetically dependent. Occurrence of genetic adaptation to high concentrations of heavy metals in Hediste diversicolor local ecotypes has also been hypothesised. Analyses of allozymic patterns are a promising tool for the genetic monitoring of environmental stressors. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the allozymic patterns of H. diversicolor could be affected by levels of contamination. Five sites were investigated: four in a polluted brackish habitat, the Pialassa lagoons, and a reference site in the Lamone estuary. Total mercury was used as a tracer of the overall level of contamination. Concentrations of mercury were quantified...

Removal of heavy metals by exopolymeric substances produced by resistant purple nonsulfur bacteria isolated from contaminated shrimp ponds Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Panwichian,Saijai; Kantachote,Duangporn; Wittayaweerasak,Banjong; Mallavarapu,Megharaj.
Two purple nonsulfur bacteria (PNSB) strains, Rhodobium marinum NW16 and Rhodobacter sphaeroides KMS24 were investigated for their potential to remove heavy metals (HMs) from contaminated shrimp pond water. Tolerance of both PNSB strains growing with both microaerobic-light and aerobic-dark conditions, based on their minimum inhibitory concentrations, was in the order of Cu2+ > Zn2+ > Cd2+ (Pb precipitation occurred at 0.34 mM). Results from a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDX) indicated that Cu2+ and Zn2+ altered the cellular morphology of both strains and accumulated HMs were found in their cells. The highest amounts of both cations were found in their cell walls followed by the cytoplasm...

Amilhat, Elsa; Fazio, Geraldine; Simon, Gael; Manetti, Marc; Paris, Severine; Delahaut, Laurence; Farrugio, Henri; Lecomte-finiger, Raymonde; Sasal, Pierre; Faliex, Elisabeth.
The degradation in the quality of silver eel and their health could have been a major factor in the collapse of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) population. However, the health status of the spawners has been poorly studied until now. This study evaluated the quality of migrant male silver eels from four Mediterranean habitats in France presenting different degrees of contamination: Canet-Saint-Nazaire, Salses-Leucate and Bages-Sigean lagoons and La Berre River. We considered pathogens including Anguillicoloides crassus and EVEX virus and the concentration of chemical contaminants including PCBs, OCs and heavy metals. Our study results revealed different patterns of pollution and infection in the four habitats, with high individual variability. No...

Spirolide uptake and detoxification by Crassostrea gigas exposed to the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium ostenfeldii ArchiMer
Medhioub, Walid; Lassus, Patrick; Truquet, Philippe; Bardouil, Michele; Amzil, Zouher; Sechet, Veronique; Sibat, Manoella; Soudant, Philippe.
Oysters (Crassostrea gigas) were exposed 4 days to cultures of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium ostenfeldii (strain CCMP1773) that produces spirolides belonging to fast acting toxins (FAT) and let depurate for 7 days. During depuration, oysters were either fed the non-toxic algae Isochrysis galbana Tahitian clone (T. Iso) or starved. The objectives of this experiment were to evaluate (i) spirolide uptake and depuration by oysters (ii) spirolide effects on oysters and (iii) oyster recovery according to food supply during depuration. A. ostenfeldii cells were filtered and ingested by oysters while faeces contained numerous intact cells of the toxic diet. This suggested that ingested cells were not totally digested by oysters. Contents of spirolides (SPX)...

State of the science and the way forward for the ecotoxicological assessment of contaminated land PAB
Kuperman,Roman G.; Checkai,Ronald T.; Garcia,Marcos Vinicius Bastos; Römbke,Jörg; Stephenson,Gladys L.; Sousa,José Paulo.
Over the past two decades, soil ecotoxicologists have made strides in utilizing the basic concepts and advancements in soil zoology and ecology. They have applied the existing tools, and developed new ones to investigate how chemical contamination can affect soil ecosystems, including the degradation or destruction of soil quality and habitats or the diminishment of belowground biodiversity. Soil ecotoxicologists are applying a suite of standard protocols, originally developed as laboratory tests with single chemicals (e.g., pesticides), and further enhancing both the approaches and protocols for the assessment of contaminated lands. However, ecological relevance of some approaches remains unresolved. The authors discuss the main challenges for a coherent...

The Brownfields Phenomenon: Much Ado about Something or the Timing of the Shrewd? AgEcon
Wernstedt, Kris; Heberle, Lauren; Alberini, Anna; Meyer, Peter.
This paper provides an overview of the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated properties known as "brownfields." It has three principal parts. First, we introduce the brownfields phenomenon and its drivers, drawing on the body of available empirical evidence to discuss characteristics of individual brownfield redevelopment projects. Second, we present findings from a recent study we have conducted that examines the relative attractiveness to private developers of public interventions to promote brownfields redevelopment. Third, we briefly summarize some of the problems with brownfields development and policy and propose an approach to promote wider societal benefits of brownfields development. We conclude with several broad questions about brownfields...

The impacts of land use changes in the mercury flux in the Madeira River, Western Amazon Anais da ABC (AABC)
Lacerda,Luiz D.; Bastos,Wanderley R.; Almeida,Marcelo D..
Changes in hydrochemistry and Hg distribution in the Madeira River from Porto Velho to the confluence with the Amazon River were studied in two cruises in 1997 and 2002. Water conductivity was similar in both periods, but the pH was significantly higher in 2002, in particular along the middle reaches of the river. Total suspended matter concentrations also increased from 1997 to 2002 along the same river portion, which is a result of forest conversion to other land uses, in particular pastures and agriculture accelerated during the interval between the cruises. Dissolved Hg concentrations were similar along the river in both cruises, but particulate Hg concentrations increased significantly along the middle portion of the river, although the suspended...
